About Lemma

Lemma is a daily, plain-English newspaper for science. Every morning it reads newly published research, picks the papers a curious person would actually care about, and explains each one in clear language — with an honest assessment of how much to trust it.

How it's made

The summaries are written by an AI (Anthropic's Claude). It reads each paper — the full text when the paper is open-access, otherwise the abstract — and writes a plain-English story. A human curator reviews the borderline cases: papers the AI flagged as striking but wasn't sure about appear in the "On the fence" section for a person to judge.

Our editorial rules

• Never invent a finding, and never inflate how certain it is.
• Always keep the caveats — sample size, study design, whether it's a preprint, whether it's only in animals.
• Every story links to the original peer-reviewed paper so you can check it yourself.
• A paper analysed only from its abstract can never be graded our top tier — we can't verify the methods we didn't read.
