Why it matters

Some governments spend hundreds of millions of dollars on campaigns to change what people in other countries believe. A chatbot that helps write that content makes the work cheap, fast, and possible in many languages at once. The study also found that the weakest chatbots did not simply repeat the claim they were given. They added frightening details of their own, including one invented line about turning deadly germs into weapons. Keep in mind this measures only what chatbots are willing to write, not whether real people were convinced, and every test was written in English.
