AI drug-dose helper often matched hospital pharmacists — but not safely enough yet
An AI assistant suggested doses of a powerful antibiotic nearly as well as hospital pharmacists, but sometimes unsafely. In 403 real dosing decisions it came close to the pharmacist's dose 73% of the time; a second pharmacist managed 90%.

Why it matters
Vancomycin is a strong antibiotic for serious infections, and the safe dose is a narrow target. Too little leaves the infection alive; too much can harm the kidneys and hearing, so pharmacists work out each person's dose by hand. This test, run quietly in the background with the suggestions never given to patients, hints that software could one day help with that slow job. For now it cannot be trusted alone: when the computer disagreed with the pharmacist, a pharmacist found a real safety problem in about two thirds of those cases.
