The brain area that may notice a blocked breath firstناحیه‌ای از مغز که شاید اول از همه متوجه بسته شدن راه تنفس می‌شود

A deep brain area seems to react first when a breath is suddenly blocked, then passes the signal on to areas just behind the eyes. Researchers recorded electricity directly inside the brains of patients already undergoing brain surgery.

Why it matters

Feeling unable to breathe is one of the most frightening feelings a person can have. It happens in asthma, in long-term lung disease, in panic attacks and during sleep problems, and medicines often help only a little. One reason may be that the feeling of breathlessness is partly built by the brain, not only by the lungs. Knowing which brain areas build it is an early step toward calming it, but this was a small, unusual group of patients and no treatment comes out of it yet.
