While we sleep, single brain cells may replay what we just learned

In deep sleep, brain cells that react to one specific person or thing fired together again in tiny bursts. Researchers listened to 1,097 single cells inside the brains of 10 people across 21 nights.

Why it matters

Sleep is not wasted time. These recordings show memory signals travelling from the hippocampus, a small inner part of the brain that holds new memories, out toward the brain's outer layers. That transfer is thought to be how one day's experience becomes a lasting memory. This is early work, though: the volunteers had epilepsy and already had fine wires placed in their brains for medical care, so other brains may behave differently, and the study shows the pattern happens rather than proving it causes better memory.
