An old Alzheimer's vaccine may still protect brain cell connections 14 years later

An experimental Alzheimer's vaccine may leave less damage around the sticky protein clumps that remain in the brain. Researchers compared brain tissue donated after death by vaccinated patients, untreated patients, and healthy people, up to 14 years after the shot.

Why it matters

Alzheimer's disease slowly takes away memory, and the damage starts where brain cells connect to each other. Some people in an old trial were given a vaccine meant to train the body to clear away the sticky protein clumps, called amyloid plaques. Years later, their brain tissue showed better-preserved connections and less build-up of a second harmful protein, called tau, near the clumps that were still there. Today's newest Alzheimer's medicines attack the same clumps, so a long-lasting effect would be encouraging news. But this study looked at donated brain tissue, not at whether these people remembered or thought better, so it cannot say the vaccine helped daily life.
