Super-heavy dark matter could explain a cosmic-ray puzzle — but the light it would create is missingماده تاریک فوقسنگین میتواند یک معمای پرتوهای کیهانی را توضیح دهد — اما نوری که باید همراهش پدید میآمد، دیده نمیشود
A strange bend in the stream of particles from space could come from heavy dark matter falling apart. But that would also make gamma rays — very high-energy light — and the sky shows at least 20 times too few.

Why it matters
Dark matter makes up most of the matter in the universe, and nobody knows what it is. One idea is a particle far heavier than anything a machine on Earth can make, left over from the first moments after the Big Bang. This team showed that such a particle cannot be the cause of a well-known kink in the energy of cosmic particles, because the glow that would come with it is simply not there. Closing off wrong answers is slow, unglamorous work, but it is how the real answer gets found — and the same light test can now be used on any future claim of this kind.
