Letting software suggest where refugees settle helped more of them find workپیشنهاد محل اسکان پناهجویان توسط نرم‌افزار، به شغل‌یابی بیشتر آنان کمک کرد

Software suggested which Swiss region each arriving refugee should go to, aiming for the best chance of a job. Across 2,000 cases followed for three years, those refugees worked about 10% more months than refugees placed the usual way.

Why it matters

When a country gives refugees protection, an official decides which region they go to. That decision is often close to random, and it shapes a person's life for years. Here a computer program used past records to estimate where each person had the best chance of finding work, and a human officer made the final call. The gains were small but real, and they cost almost nothing, because the government had to make the placement decision anyway. The effect was clearest for people who arrived after the pandemic, so it may be smaller when the job market is unsettled.

Who's behind it: Kirk Bansak, Jens Hainmueller, Dominik Hangartner and colleagues, Stanford University, ETH Zurich, UC Berkeley, Dartmouth College and Harvard Business School, with the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration. Funded by Schmidt Futures, Google.org, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Charles Koch Foundation, Open Society Foundations and the European Research Council; the Swiss government paid the team nothing.
