A blood protein may warn of dementia risk 11 years ahead

A protein in blood called pTau217 helped predict who would later develop dementia. Among 3,935 older Norwegians followed for 11 years, it sorted higher-risk from lower-risk people correctly about 77% of the time.

Why it matters

Today dementia is usually spotted only once memory problems have started. A simple blood sample that gives a warning years earlier could help doctors watch the right people closely and offer help sooner. The researchers also tested eight lifestyle checklists, which score things like blood pressure, exercise, hearing and education. Those checklists added only a little extra accuracy on top of the blood protein, but they point to habits a person can actually change. One caution: the test worked much less well in people under 65, so it is not ready to be used on healthy middle-aged adults.
