Why it matters

Smoking is one of the biggest causes of early death in the world, and quitting is very hard. This study suggests that simply handing someone an e-cigarette starter kit (a device that heats liquid nicotine into a vapour you breathe in) helps, even when no counsellor or support group is available. That matters in places where such support is scarce or where people do not want it. But be careful reading the numbers: about four out of five people still had not quit after six months, and e-cigarettes are not harmless, so the long-term health effects of switching are still being studied.
