Coaching parents before babies can talk may prevent later speech problems

Babies with a rare inherited disease often grow up with serious speech and language problems. Coaching their parents by weekly video call, starting as early as 5 months old, led to better speech scores at age two than usual care.

Why it matters

Today, speech problems are usually only spotted and treated once a child is two to four years old. This study asks a different question: can you start before the first words, while a baby is still cooing and babbling? The babies whose parents started earliest ended up with about the same share of worrying scores as children with no known risk. It is a small study in one rare condition, so it is an early sign rather than proof, but the same idea is now being tried with babies with Down syndrome and babies born early.
