Why it matters
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, and once it spreads it is hard to control. This test was only for men whose tumours carry faults in the genes that repair damaged DNA, which is a minority of patients. So far the drug delays the cancer getting worse, but it has not yet been shown to help men live longer. It also caused more harm: about half of the men had a serious drop in red blood cells, which brings tiredness and weakness, and two men died from the treatment itself.
