Why it matters

Parents and teachers often see teenagers suddenly caring a lot about friends. This study puts numbers on that shift, and shows it grows steadily rather than appearing overnight. It also found that brain areas linked to memory and to what feels rewarding keep changing during the same years. Important: the two things happening at once does not prove one causes the other, and only girls were studied, so boys may follow a different pattern.
