Why it matters

Many people assume unequal pay begins on the first day of work. This study suggests that in South Korea most of the gap builds up later, during the years of promotions, long hours and raising children. If that is right, rules that only police starting salaries would miss most of the problem. It is one country with unusual conditions, including two years of military service for men, so other places may look different.
