After lung cancer surgery, a daily pill kept the disease away in most patients
A daily pill helped stop lung cancer coming back after surgery in people whose tumour carries a faulty gene called RET. Two years later, 92% of pill takers were still free of cancer, against 61% given dummy pills.

Why it matters
Lung cancer is often removed by surgery, but for many people it returns later. This trial tested a pill aimed at one specific broken gene, found in only about 1 or 2 out of every 100 lung cancers. For that small group, the results suggest a real chance of staying well for longer. It is still early: patients were followed for about two years, so we do not yet know whether they live longer overall, and about one in five had liver blood tests turn clearly abnormal while taking the drug.
