Chickadees with better memory for hidden food fathered more chicks outside their pair

Male mountain chickadees that remembered hidden food best fathered more chicks with other males' partners. Researchers tested wild birds' memory for places, then used DNA to check who fathered each chick.

Why it matters

Mountain chickadees hide thousands of seeds and must remember where, or they starve in winter. This study suggests that memory is not only useful for survival, it may also affect which males have the most young. Over many generations, that could be one reason these birds have such good memory for places. But this is a pattern found in wild birds, not proof of cause, and people choose partners for very different reasons.
