A gentle electric nudge deep in the brain during sleep may help memories stick
Currents aimed at a deep memory area while people slept helped them keep newly learned word pairs. It worked only when the current arrived at the same moment as a cue replaying the memory.

Why it matters
While you sleep, your brain replays what you learned that day and files it away. This study is an early sign that we can reach that deep filing process from outside the head, with no surgery. If it holds up in bigger studies, it could one day help people whose memory fades, such as after a brain injury or in dementia. For now it is a first step in a small laboratory setting, not a treatment.
