A contact lens that may one day read stress from your tears

Scientists built a soft contact lens that senses serotonin, a body chemical linked to mood, in tears. It kept working for 28 days in tear-like liquid, and tracked stress in mice and in a small first test with people.

Why it matters

Today, measuring stress chemicals usually means drawing blood with a needle, or filling in a questionnaire about your own feelings. A lens you already wear could do it without pain and without guessing. But this is an early device: the stress testing was mostly in mice, and human bodies may respond differently. It is also not yet proven that serotonin in tears tells you anything dependable about a person's mental health.
