A new pill helped people with narcolepsy — a brain condition causing sudden daytime sleepiness — stay awake much longer. In two trials of 273 people, sudden muscle collapses fell 79–89%, versus 28–39% on a dummy pill.

Why it matters

People with narcolepsy type 1 are missing a brain chemical called orexin, which normally keeps the body awake. Without it they fall asleep during the day, and strong emotions can make their muscles go limp for a few seconds. Today's medicines mostly just push the body to feel more alert; this pill instead switches on the same brain receiver that the missing chemical would have used. The results look strong, but the trials lasted only 12 weeks, so nobody yet knows what years of use would do. Nearly everyone taking the drug had side effects, most often needing to urinate more often and trouble falling asleep at first.
