One gene-therapy infusion kept a rare, deadly disease quiet for yearsیک تزریق ژندرمانی یک بیماری نادر و کشنده را سالها آرام نگه داشت
A single gene therapy sharply cut infections and bleeding in people born with a rare immune and blood disease. Across 27 patients followed about six years, severe infections fell from two per year to about 0.15.

Why it matters
Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome is caused by a fault in one gene, and it mostly affects boys. Their immune system cannot fight germs well, and they bruise and bleed easily because they lack enough platelets (the tiny blood cells that plug wounds). Until now the main cure was a bone-marrow transplant from a matched donor, and many children never find one. This treatment instead repairs the child's own blood-making cells, so no donor is needed. It is early and the group was small, but almost everyone survived and stayed much healthier for years.
