Two antidepressants slightly stretch a heart signal — but heart emergencies did not rise

Escitalopram and amitriptyline slightly lengthen the heart's electrical reset between beats. But across 139 trials with 52,398 people, antidepressants brought no extra heart emergencies in the first weeks of treatment.

Why it matters

Millions of people take antidepressants, and many worry the pills could hurt their heart. This study measured the heart's electrical timing, called the QT interval, which is the pause the heart takes to recharge between beats. A longer pause can, rarely, lead to a dangerous rhythm. The reassuring part is that heart emergencies and sudden deaths did not go up in the first eight weeks. The useful part is that the drugs differ from each other, so a doctor can pick one that fits a person's age, weight, kidney health and blood test results.
