A leading brain-to-text method was mostly using word timing, not brain activity

A popular way to turn brain recordings into words was mostly using a timing clue, not the brain signal itself. Given fake signals with the same timing pattern, it still scored 22.0%, nearly matching the 22.3% it got from real brain data.

Why it matters

People who lose the ability to speak could one day use a cap of sensors on the head to turn their words into text. That makes it important to know whether such systems really use brain activity. Here the authors show that one widely copied method was largely counting the gap between words, because longer words take longer to say. When they removed that shortcut and decoded each word on its own, repeating the same word five times and adding an ordinary language program brought errors down to about 37 percent of words on a small set of hospital phrases. That is still far from usable, and the volunteers were only listening to speech, not trying to speak, so this is a research step rather than a working device.
