Keeping coal plants running for data centers may cost over a thousand livesروشن نگه‌داشتن نیروگاه‌های زغال‌سنگی برای data centerها ممکن است بیش از هزار جان بگیرد

Twenty US coal plants due to close before 2035 had their shutdown dates pushed back or dropped. Researchers estimate the extra soot may cause about 1,256 more deaths among older Americans by 2035.

Why it matters

Burning coal releases fine particles of soot, so small you breathe them deep into your lungs. Over years, that soot raises the risk of heart and lung disease, especially for older people. Electricity demand is climbing, partly because of the huge buildings full of computers that run cloud services and artificial intelligence. This study puts a human number on that trade-off, though the deaths are an estimate from a computer model, not a count of real people.
