An eye injection and light-up goggles give blind volunteers an early hint of light
Ten people blinded by an inherited eye disease got one injection plus light-emitting goggles. Seven became better at detecting light, one by about 60 times, and no lasting harm was seen.

Why it matters
Retinitis pigmentosa slowly destroys the cells at the back of the eye that sense light, and there is no cure. This treatment does not give back normal sight. It only made light easier to notice, and only while the special goggles were worn, which might help someone find a doorway or a bright window. With just ten people and no comparison group, it is still too early to say how much daily life would change.
