Galaxies may stop making stars the moment fresh gas arrives too slowly

Galaxies seem to switch off star-making once fresh gas arrives more slowly than it is used up. A study of 347,182 nearby galaxies found this one simple rule matches what telescopes see.

Why it matters

Galaxies are huge families of stars, and most of them have stopped making new ones. Scientists have listed many possible reasons for this, from giant black holes to the invisible matter around a galaxy. This work suggests all those reasons act through one simple balance: how fast cold gas (the raw material for stars) comes in, against how fast it is turned into stars. That would make the life story of galaxies, including our own Milky Way, much easier to understand, though the gas timings here were worked out indirectly rather than seen directly.
