Two targeted drugs, no chemotherapy: better results for a hard adult blood cancer

Adults with a fast-growing blood cancer did better on two targeted medicines than on standard chemotherapy. After two years, 86% of them were alive with no sign the cancer had returned, compared with 67%.

Why it matters

This is leukemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow, in a form driven by one specific faulty gene signal. The usual treatment includes chemotherapy, which kills cancer cells but also harms healthy ones, causing hair loss, infections and exhaustion. Here the chemotherapy was replaced by two medicines that act on the cancer more selectively, and the results were better, not worse. Only about 1 in 5 patients needed a bone marrow transplant, a risky procedure many patients want to avoid. Follow-up was only about two years, so nobody yet knows how these people do after five or ten years.
