When AI sets shop prices, the way it is set up decides whether prices stay high

Price-setting AI programs sometimes hold prices high and sometimes push them down to the lowest level. In simulated markets, the deciding factor was what information each program was shown, not which AI model it was.

Why it matters

Many online shops already let software choose their prices, and sellers are now trying programs built on large language models (AI trained on huge amounts of text). This study hints that such programs can settle on high prices even when the market should force prices down to cost, which would mean shoppers quietly pay more. It also suggests that checking only the instructions given to an AI is not enough: what it is allowed to see about its rivals matters just as much. This was all done in a computer model of a simple market, so real shops with real customers may behave differently.
