A comet from another star seems to be made of dust that never got hot
Dust from comet 3I/ATLAS, a visitor from another star system, looks glassy rather than neatly ordered. The James Webb Space Telescope measured the heat glow of its dust cloud, and ordered crystals make up at most 5% of it.

Why it matters
Tiny grains of rock turn from glassy to neatly ordered crystals when they are baked at high temperature. Comets born in our own Solar System carry those crystals, a sign that their dust once sat close to the young Sun. This comet, which came from around another star, appears to carry almost none, which hints that it formed in a very cold, calm place and was never pulled inward and heated. We only have one brief look at one object, so this is an early picture rather than a settled fact, but it is a rare direct sample of the material that builds planets somewhere else.
