New two-chemical bed nets cut malaria in children by nearly half
Bed nets treated with two insect-killing chemicals protected children better than today's standard nets. In 33 groups of villages in Côte d'Ivoire, children with the best new nets had 43% fewer malaria cases over one year.

Why it matters
Malaria is spread by mosquito bites and still kills hundreds of thousands of young children every year, mostly in Africa. Sleeping under a treated net is one of the cheapest ways to stop it, but mosquitoes in many places have stopped dying from the old chemical used on nets. This trial suggests that adding a second chemical brings the protection back. It was done in one country over one year, so results could differ elsewhere, and the new nets cost more than the old ones.
