A family's money and circumstances may matter more for a child's health than habits during pregnancy

Parents' smoking, drinking and caffeine before birth showed few large effects on children's health. Poorer families showed more: 15% of tests on low income and education found a clear effect, against 6% for smoking.

Why it matters

Pregnant women are often told that almost everything they do will shape their child for life. This big study suggests that message is too simple, and that a family's money, work and education may count for more. One clear exception remained: mothers who smoked had children with higher body weight, more low-birthweight babies, and more sadness and behaviour problems. Because this work follows families rather than testing changes, it cannot fully prove what causes what, so it points to a direction rather than settling the question.
