Why it matters

Many countries add small amounts of fluoride to drinking water to protect teeth from decay. Some earlier studies, mostly in places with much higher fluoride levels, worried parents by hinting at harm to children's emotions and behavior. This large US study found no such link at the levels allowed there. But it is an observational study, so it cannot fully prove safety, and one part of the analysis did show slightly more acting-out behavior in the small group with the highest exposure.
