A blood test may catch returning bowel cancer early enough to remove itیک آزمایش خون شاید بتواند بازگشت سرطان روده را به‌قدری زود تشخیص دهد که هنوز بشود آن را جراحی کرد

A blood test that looks for tumor DNA helped doctors find returning bowel cancer while it could still be cut out. Researchers randomly gave 584 patients either the blood test plus scans, or scans alone.

Why it matters

Bowel cancer often comes back months or years after surgery. If the return is found early, while it is small and in one place, surgeons can sometimes remove it and the person may still be cured. This blood test looks for tiny pieces of tumor DNA (the instruction molecule inside cells) floating in the blood, and for the chemical tags sitting on it. Cancer came back just as often in both groups, so the test does not prevent anything. It only gives an earlier warning, and the trial has not yet shown that patients live longer because of it.
