Thinking skills may start slipping in our thirties, a big three-country study hints

Small drops in thinking skills showed up as early as age 31, long before memory changed. Researchers followed 14,389 adults in China, the United States and Czechia for seven to nine years.

Why it matters

Doctors usually start worrying about memory only in old age. This study suggests the slow change begins much earlier, in the parts of thinking that handle attention, speed and reasoning. That is hopeful, because habits like sleep, exercise and blood pressure control are easiest to change in midlife. But be careful: the early drop was tiny on average, and people differed enormously, so age alone does not predict your own path.
