Gene editing freed 16 children from blood transfusions and pain attacks — but the harsh preparation killed one childویرایش ژن 16 کودک را از تزریق خون و حملات درد نجات داد؛ اما آمادهسازی سخت این درمان جان یک کودک را گرفت
A one-time gene-editing treatment freed children with two inherited blood diseases from transfusions and severe pain attacks. All 16 children followed at least 16 months were free of them. One of the 26 treated died from the preparation drug.

Why it matters
Both diseases come from a fault in the gene for hemoglobin, the substance in blood that carries oxygen. Children with them need new blood every few weeks, or suffer attacks of crushing pain when stiff blood cells block small vessels. Here doctors took each child's own blood-making cells, changed one piece of their DNA so the body switches back on a spare kind of hemoglobin it used as a baby, and put the cells back. The catch is the preparation: strong chemotherapy wipes out the old cells first, every child had a serious side effect, and that chemotherapy is what killed one of them.
