A deeper way of reading DNA found answers for a handful of families who had noneروشی عمیق‌تر برای خواندن DNA، پاسخ چند خانواده را پیدا کرد؛ خانواده‌هایی که تا پیش از این هیچ پاسخی نداشتند

Some children have a genetic illness that standard DNA tests cannot explain. A newer method that reads DNA in much longer stretches found the cause in 5 of 107 unsolved cases, about 1 in 21.

Why it matters

Families with a rare illness often spend years going from doctor to doctor without a name for it. A name matters: it can point to treatment, tell parents the chances for a future child, and connect them to others with the same condition. This study suggests that when the usual DNA test comes back empty, the longer-reading test is worth trying, because it can see parts of our DNA the older test skips over. The gain is small in numbers, but for those five families it was the answer they had been waiting for.
