Diamond sensors pick up the heart's faint magnetic whisper — no heavy shielded room needed

Small sensors made from diamond measured the very weak magnetic field of a beating human heart, without touching the skin. Researchers added up many heartbeats and filtered out background magnetism to get a clear trace.

Why it matters

Every heartbeat makes a tiny magnetic field around your body, and reading it can show heart problems that skin electrodes miss. But today's magnetic heart scanners need sensors chilled to extreme cold and a special room that blocks outside magnetism, so almost no hospital has one. These diamond sensors work at normal room temperature and are small, which could one day make contactless heart checks cheap and ordinary — helpful for burn patients or newborns, where sticking pads on the skin is hard. This is still an early demonstration: the signal only became clear after many heartbeats were combined, so it cannot yet follow a heart beat by beat.
