Why it matters

Political anger is easy to see online, and it can be hard to tell how deep it really goes. This survey suggests a gap between opinions and intentions: agreeing that violence is sometimes justified is not the same as being ready to use it. One detail stands out, though. Among the strongest Republicans, about 15% thought they would be carrying a gun in a situation where they saw violence as justified, compared with about 5% of the strongest Democrats. This was one survey taken in mid-2022, and the results depend heavily on which 17 political goals people were asked about, so the numbers should not be read as fixed facts about either group.
