Why it matters
These illnesses usually appear in the late teens or twenties, and help often arrives late. This study says that most of those young people were already sitting in a clinic years earlier, so doctors had a chance to watch for warning signs. The risk was highest for teenagers who had stayed overnight in a psychiatric hospital: half of them had such a diagnosis by age 32. But most children who visit these clinics never develop psychosis or bipolar disorder, and the study cannot say the visits caused anything. Denmark has free, well-recorded healthcare, so the picture may look different in other countries.
