One rare gene change may more than triple the risk of schizophrenia and bipolar disorderیک تغییر ژنتیکی نادر ممکن است خطر ابتلا به schizophrenia و bipolar disorder را به بیش از سه برابر افزایش دهد

Researchers found a single gene change that more than triples the risk of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. They read the genes of about 22,000 people with serious mental illness and 20,000 without, all from one community in Colombia.

Why it matters

Most genetic risk for serious mental illness comes from thousands of tiny effects, which are very hard to study. A single change with a large effect gives scientists something concrete to follow. This one cuts short a gene called ADAP1, which helps young brain cells grow their branches. People carrying it had more hallucinations, more high-energy "manic" periods, and more trouble with planning and self-control than other patients. This is a first step, not a treatment, and the change is rare and concentrated in one population, so it will not explain most cases elsewhere.
