Eating lots of eggs and peanuts while pregnant did not protect babies from food allergy

Eating many eggs and peanuts during pregnancy and breastfeeding did not lower a baby's chance of food allergy. In a trial with over 2,100 mothers, about 8 in 100 babies had the allergy in both groups.

Why it matters

Food allergy to eggs or peanuts can be frightening and sometimes dangerous, and many families want to prevent it early. Some people believed a mother could protect her baby by eating a lot of these foods while pregnant. This large trial found no such protection, so parents do not need to change their diet for that reason. It also does not mean avoiding these foods helps, and other ways to prevent allergy, like giving these foods to babies early, were not tested here.
