A quantum property that can only be one-half was made to read about

Physicists measured an atomic property whose only possible answers are plus or minus one-half, and the reading came out near 7. They pushed ultra-cold atoms very gently, then kept only the rare atoms that ended in one chosen state.

Why it matters

This strange result is not a mistake. When you measure something extremely gently and then throw away almost every atom, the few that survive can show a shift far bigger than the push that was actually applied. Here the shift was about 14 times larger than the real one, which is a way to make faint signals easier to see. That could one day help detectors that map tiny magnetic fields, though this is a first laboratory demonstration with a large margin of error, not a working instrument.
