A strange new plant that feeds on fungi, not sunlight, found in Guineaکشف یک گیاه عجیب جدید در Guinea که به‌جای نور خورشید از قارچ‌ها تغذیه می‌کند

Researchers found a new kind of plant in Guinea with no green parts, which takes its food from underground fungi instead of sunlight. DNA tests placed it in a plant family never before recorded in West Africa.

Why it matters

Almost all plants make their own food from sunlight. A few have given that up and live off fungi in the soil, and we still know very little about them. This one was found on land marked for a mining project, with fewer than ten plants growing in a space of a few square metres. The team says it could disappear before anyone learns how it lives, and similar African plants have already been lost.
