In deadly blood infections, the patient may matter far more than the germ

The bacteria's attack genes barely changed who survived a blood infection. A model built from 35,746 patients' hospital records predicted deaths well, and adding over 70,000 bacterial genes and proteins made it no better.

Why it matters

A bloodstream infection is when bacteria get into the blood, and it can kill quickly. Doctors often ask whether a patient caught an especially dangerous strain of bacteria. This study hints that the answer matters much less than the patient's own age, other illnesses and overall condition. If that holds up elsewhere, the most useful minutes may be spent on treating the person fast, not on identifying a scary strain. It does not mean bacteria never matter — which antibiotics a germ resists is a separate question, and this looked at hospitals in just one city.
