Pills sold as a gentle herb were full of hidden opioid-like chemicals

Pills sold as the herb cat's claw actually contained opioid-like chemicals from the kratom plant. Chemists tested 46 products from 17 brands. All 46 held kratom chemicals, and no label mentioned them.

Why it matters

Many people buy herbal supplements and trust what the label says. Here the label told buyers nothing useful: eight products even promised "NO KRATOM" and still contained it. The amounts varied hugely, from a trace up to 95 milligrams of the strongest chemical in one single piece, so two pills from the same shelf could act very differently. Five products also held tianeptine, a depression drug that is not approved in the United States. If someone becomes very sleepy or struggles to breathe after taking one of these pills, doctors now know to look for opioids.
