Stuttering has genetic roots, and they overlap with genes already tied to rare speech disorders. Researchers compared the DNA of 6,096 people who stutter with 81,629 people who do not.

Why it matters

Up to one in ten children stutters at some point, and many are still told it comes from nerves or bad parenting. This study supports a different story: the difficulty can begin in the parts of the brain that control the movements of speech. It still cannot predict who will stutter, because the genetic signal is far too weak for that. Everyone studied had European family roots, so the picture may look different in other populations.
