Tiny hairs may let a hovering moth feel a flower sway

Hair bundles at the base of a hawkmoth's long drinking tube appear to sense a swaying flower. Nerves from those hairs fired about 1.9 thousandths of a second after the tube bent sideways.

Why it matters. A hawkmoth drinks while hovering, keeping a long thin mouthpart inside a flower that is moving in the wind. Scientists already knew the moth uses its eyes; this work suggests it also uses a sense of touch, and a very fast one. Learning how a small animal corrects its position in milliseconds could help engineers build steadier flying machines and better robot hands. This is one insect, though, and a moth's body is not a human body, so do not assume our own senses work the same way.

A spare ring of DNA may turn a coral's bacteria from harmful to helpfulیک حلقه DNA اضافه شاید باکتری‌های مرجان را از مضر به مفید تبدیل کند

Some bacteria living inside coral carry a spare ring of DNA. Corals hosting those bacteria stood water about 1°C hotter before turning white and sickening. Almost identical bacteria without the ring sped up that damage instead.

Why it matters. When the sea gets too warm, corals turn white and starve, because they lose the tiny algae that feed them. Reefs are dying this way around the world, and a single degree of extra heat tolerance is a big difference for them. This work hints that the right bacteria, carried inside the coral, could be part of the reason some reefs survive. If that holds up, people might one day give struggling reefs helpful bacteria on purpose. For now it is one set of tank experiments, so nobody should promise a rescue for real reefs yet.

Gut bacteria may break down the woodiest part of plants

Human gut bacteria can take apart lignin, the tough material that makes plants woody and stiff. In oxygen-free tubes, scientists marked lignin's carbon atoms and later found those marks inside smaller new compounds.

Why it matters. Lignin is in whole grains, bran, flax seeds and many vegetables. For over a hundred years, scientists argued about whether our bodies do anything with it at all. This study suggests the bacteria living in our intestines chop it up, and that some pieces become enterolignans - small compounds that pass into the blood and are being studied for links to heart health and some cancers. This was done in sealed tubes in a laboratory, not in living people, so it is too early to change what anyone eats.lignin

Lab-grown brain tissue hints an autism-linked DNA change speeds up how cells connectبافت مغزی رشدیافته در آزمایشگاه نشان می‌دهد یک حذف DNA مرتبط با اوتیسم ممکن است روند ارتباط‌گیری سلول‌ها را سریع‌تر کند

A computer program that analysed lab-grown human brain tissue found that samples with an autism-linked DNA deletion formed connections faster than usual. It trained on over 900 hours of electrical recordings.

Why it matters. Scientists can grow tiny clumps of human brain tissue in a dish, called organoids. These clumps are not people and have no senses or thoughts, but their cells fire signals to each other like real brain cells do. That lets researchers watch how a genetic difference linked to autism changes early development, without testing on anyone. The team also had the tissue control a simulated balancing stick, and the cells used activity patterns they already had rather than making new ones. This is an early result from a study that other scientists have not yet checked, and tissue in a dish can behave very differently from a living brain.

Drone video hints that baby whales copy how their mothers find food

Young gray whales appear to copy their mothers' feeding moves. Nine years of drone video caught six calves starting a feeding move seconds after their mother did, using her exact move in 9 of 21 dives.

Why it matters. Gray whales feed in several different ways, and some moves are hard to do well. If calves learn these moves by watching their mothers, then knowledge is passed from one whale generation to the next, like a local tradition. That matters for protecting them: this small group has only about 213 animals, and losing experienced mothers could mean losing feeding skills that are taught rather than inborn. This is a study of whales, not of people, so it says nothing direct about how humans learn. And it is an early hint, not proof - the researchers watched behaviour, they did not run an experiment.
